Tevez hangs up his boots after death of adopted dad

- By LIAM WOOD

ARGENTINA great Carlos Tevez has called time on a superb playing career that saw him represent both Manchester clubs and controversially switch from United to City in 2009.

Despite having offers to continue – namely from the MLS – the 38-year-old has hung up his boots as well as citing the heart-breaking reason for that decision. Tevez admits he’s struggled for footballing motivation after the death of his adopted father, Segundo Raimundo, in February.

Tevez has been without a club since leaving beloved hometown side Boca Juniors last season and leaves a mixed legacy in Manchester. He first touched down in the Premier League with West Ham in 2006.

One year later, the Argentine signed for United under Sir Alex Ferguson.

However, there was controversy to follow as Tevez swapped red for blue after two seasons and went on to make 148 appearances for City; scoring 73 goals in all competitions and forming part of the squad that won a first ever Premier League title for the club in 2012.

In a statement, Tevez said: “I have retired, it’s confirmed. They offered me many things, including from the United States, but that’s it, I have given everything. Playing in the last year was very difficult, but I was able to see my old man. I stopped playing because I lost my number one fan.”

Tevez added: “I eat empanadas and drink fernet and wine – whatever I want.

“I take care of myself a little, but I now have an extra three or four kilos. I get up a little later. I can’t imagine going back to training and running. I used to get up at 6am to go training. I don’t have the strength to do that now.”
