It’s Sio long Devils legend brings end to 5-year stay

- By MATTHEW SHAW

SALFORD Red Devils have confirmed the departure of winger Ken Sio on compassionate grounds. Sio, who scored 78 tries in 104 appearances for the club, has brought an end to his five-year stay with the Reds.

The news will come as a shock to many, with Sio a key player for Salford throughout his stay. He signed a new contract with the club earlier this year after being named as their top try-scorer for a third consecutive season.

But the 33-year-old’s personal circumstances have changed and he will now no longer return to the club. As a result, the Reds have a quota spot at their disposal for next season.

“It was difficult to hear that Ken will not be returning to Salford,” head coach Paul Rowley said. “The whole group holds Kenny in such high regard and he has been a trusted friend to myself and the group.

“We do however fully support Ken’s decision to give his full attention to his family and wish him, Vicky and the twins the absolute best in the future.”

Director of Rugby and Operations, Ian Blease, has added: “In such difficult circumstances, I would like to wish Ken and his family all the best. I would like to put on record a massive thank you for his professionalism and dedication during his five years at the club.

“He has been one of our finest signings over that period; an ultimate pro and someone I consider a very close friend. I know the supporters hold him in very high regard and his presence and energy around the place will be missed - a real legend of this club.”
