City eateries on menu in best of taste

FOUR RESTAURANTS NAMED IN UK’S TOP 100

- By JENNA CAMPBELL

A NUMBER of restaurants across Manchester have been named among the UK’s top 100 to visit this year.

The list, curated by SquareMeal combines critic-led opinions and thousands of votes from diners.

The independent guide to the best restaurants, bars and venues, provides a ‘snapshot’ of must-visit eateries for 2024 and includes 38 new entries.

Outside of London, cities including Birmingham and Bristol led the way with five restaurants in the listing, while Manchester was close with four.

This year’s top spot has been awarded to Pine in Northumberland, a renovated cow barn championing sustainable cooking.

Here in Manchester, the highest ranking restaurant to feature was Higher Ground on New York Street, which nabbed 18th position.

The restaurant, which is quickly approaching its first birthday, was founded by three industry veterans who first met in New York before setting up shop in Manchester.

In its listing of the ‘ideally located’ city centre restaurant, SquareMeal said: “Higher Ground is the British bistro showcasing everything this little island has to offer. Changing the menu based on seasonality throughout the UK, you can always expect a creative selection of dishes showcasing ingredients from land and sea.”

Next up in 53rd position is The Sparrows, where the guide says spatzle, continental pasta and dumpling dishes are “treated with the warmth and appreciation they deserve”. The hidden Manchester restaurant is nestled underneath railway arches in Red Bank in the Green Quarter and was last year awarded a Bib Gourmand as well as a spot in the January edition of the Michelin Inspector’s Favourite New Restaurants.

Also receiving a nod in this year’s listings is Erst, a natural wine bar and restaurant just off Cutting Room Square in Ancoats. Described as ‘achingly cool’ by SquareMeal, its smart natural wines and stylish smalls plates sealed its ranking of number 69. Since opening its doors in 2019 it has been heaped with praise from the national and regional press and received the accolade of being one of Jay Rayner’s favourite meals in 2021.

Completing the pack for Manchester is 10 Tib Lane in 99th position.

The three-storey restaurant and bar, which opened in the former Blocke Bier site in July 2021, has become a beloved haunt of both Manchester residents and the hospitality industry, wowing punters with their seasonal and local small plates and delicious wines and cocktails.

In its listing, SquareMeal said: “Devoid of any unnecessary gimmicks and tricks, 10 Tib Lane is assertive and refreshingly uncomplicated.”
