SALFORD Red Devils head coach Paul Rowley has issued an open advertisement for new players after confirming his slim squad will be at least one man down for the start of the season.

The Reds will be without new signing Ethan Ryan for the round one game against Leeds Rhinos as he continues to recover from a wrist injury.

Salford currently have the smallest squad in the competition, with the Reds only having 24 senior players to choose from.

Rowley admitted that another five of his players were currently dealing with injuries, and while some of them will be fit in time to play their opening Super League game, others may not.

“Ethan Ryan won’t be available,” Rowley confirmed to M.E.N. Sport.

“We have a couple of scan results we’re waiting on. What I can say is we won’t have 24 players for round one and I’m pretty sure we won’t have 23.

“If I’ve got 21 to pick from, I’ll be a happy man.”

Rowley hopes that the club will be able to add to his squad before they make the trip to Headingley.

That said, he admitted that trying to recruit in January was problematic, and in doing so, he declared the club open to all options with just a few weeks to go until the new season.

“Numbers are the key at the moment, but January isn’t the best time to go shopping for quality,” he said.

“It’s difficult, yet remarkably, we’re quite chilled.

“But it would be unrealistic to think a 24-man squad will get through the season.

“As a club, we understand we need more recruits; we’ve got some trials and tribulations with the measures and all that, but we’ve got to find a way and there’s a willingness to do that.

“We maybe need a little bit of luck to unearth something, so treat this as an advert – club seeks players of all positions; we’re into you.”
