Alvarez is the future of club – Rodri

RODRI expects Julian Alvarez to prove himself as ‘the future’ at City following his two matchwinning goals against Burnley last night.

He was on target following Alvarez’s double for the Treble-winners in their 3-1 victory at the Etihad Stadium – with Ameen Al Dakhil netting a last-gasp consolation.

Other than that 92nd-minute blip, the Blues were in control from start to finish against Vincent Kompany’s side and Alvarez played a leading role in the victory.

The birthday boy – who was celebrating turning 24 – displayed his goalscoring instincts on a night when City welcomed fit-again Erling Haaland back into their matchday squad.

During his post-match interview, Spanish midfielder Rodri told TNT Sports: “We’re happy with the result. Of course, it’s never easy against these teams, but had focus from the first minute.

“I thought we played a very complete game. In the second half with the third goal it was a little more relaxed.”

Rodri added: “He’s a good boy [Alvarez]. He doesn’t need to celebrate. I’m so happy for him because his season has been great. He’s now 24 and the future of this club.

“He’s very well adapted [since his transfer from River Plate]. I’m so happy for him.”

On his own strike, the Spaniard added: “I was shouting for Phil [Foden] to pass to me because I knew I was alone, but I was very happy to score and I always say that I could improve in these situations [scoring goals].”

City were handed a double selection boost for their midweek Premier League match. In addition to them having Haaland available for the first time since December 6, owing to a troublesome foot injury, the Treble-winners also had England regular John Stones available to start - following an ankle problem.
