Striker told to quit Reds ‘goldfish bowl’

per cent certain what we would get whereas with Gordon we knew and Maddison we knew. I wouldn’t rule Cole out of that equation.”

Rashford’s lack of action will be more concerning given Southgate’s comments before the international break, when he was told that he had a fight on his hands to be a part of another major tournament squad.

“He has a battle on his hands with Gordon, with Palmer, with Foden, so we’ve got big competition for places in that area,” Southgate said.

“What happens while players are with their clubs is club matters, because they know the full story. Obviously, we observe everything, we don’t miss anything. I don’t say behaviours off the field are irrelevant, because clearly they’re not.

“But the key thing is we are mainly focusing on the performances on the field. He’s got big competition. So has Jack [Grealish].”

Grealish is another name to throw into the equation, with the £100m City winger having a difficult campaign of his own, with injury ruling him out of this squad.

It is no fait accompli for Rashford to be a part of Euro 2024 after these friendlies. In fact, after this international break, it might be that he is facing up to a summer at home.

But he has time to change that. After 17 goals in 60 international caps, he might feel he deserves more. If finding himself back in the spotlight has made him angry, it could help United during a run-in when they need to make ground up to secure Champions League football and aim to win the FA Cup.

MARCUS Rashford has been urged to leave the ‘goldfish bowl of Manchester United’ ahead of the summer transfer window.

The 26-year-old has been heavily linked with an exit from Old Trafford for a while now as he continues to struggle this season for the Reds.

And now former Crystal Palace owner and talkSPORT pundit Simon Jordan has explained why a move would benefit both the player and the club.

In a column for the Daily Mail, Jordan said: “For whatever reason, whether it’s the life that he leads or the way he views the world, the pressure of playing for United or having too much money and too many distractions, I don’t see a player who has evolved. The best we saw of him was at the start of his career and a brief rally last season. It’s certainly hard to argue he has become a better player in the last five years. I think he’s got worse, I don’t see any area of his game that has developed.

“For a man who protests to love Manchester United so much it’s a difficult situation but I think it’s perhaps time for him to move on. He’s run his course at Old Trafford and could flourish again at a new club.

“There has been endless links to Paris Saint-Germain which could be an option if it’s a move he’d be interested in.

“He won’t go short of a bob or two in France, he’ll win league titles, play in the Champions League and be away from the goldfish bowl of United and the British media.”
