PUSH VERSUS PULL
We find that when a rider doesn’t have a strong enough push they end up having to do a weaker pull to lighten their bike over things. This is more aligned with the passive style of riding mentioned earlier. They push a bit, but not really enough to generate any meaningful drive, then have to absorb the top of a feature to stop the trail from hitting them hard. This will go through everything from manuals and hops, right through to corners and jumps. A rider will push 50 per cent and pull 50 per cent. What you want to do instead is to push more, and to pull less. Those percentages should be more like 80 or 90 per cent push, and only 10 or 20 per cent pull. That way you have a more powerful drive to deliberately generate stability, like a skier. Let’s break down some specific skills and look at how you could align yourself with more of a deliberate technique in your riding.
