A DANGEROUS SPORT
CLOTHING STRATEGY
As an extreme outdoor sport, there are a few things that you need to get your head around before you can ride safely.
There are issues with access, erosion, and other user groups to consider, and that’s before you even think about looking after yourself. Remember to plan your journey, tell someone where you’re going, and bring some water, tools and spare clothing. If something goes wrong it will happen quickly, so be prepared and ride responsibly. Most GPS devices will have the option of navigating by British OS Grid. This will come in very handy if you need to call Mountain Rescue. At the very least, download a proper location app like Gridpoint GB or OS Maps. Things like What3words work in urban areas, but if you’re in the hills then it’s a job for Mountain Rescue. They will prefer a Grid Point Reference. Knowing how to provide this might save your life.
Although you don’t need any fancy clothing initially, it does make it easier and more comfortable the longer you want to stay out. Technical fabrics like merino wool or polyester are great for wicking sweat and keeping you dry, and lots of layers will allow you to regulate your temperature easily by removing or adding as appropriate. A helmet is a must. And remember to do up the strap – even when you are climbing!
