As bikes get more capable, trails get gnarlier and speeds get higher, body armour is no longer just for downhill daredevils; here’s six lighter-weight options to keep your body safe

Over recent years, mountain biking has seen a big shift in the type of tracks and terrain tackled by the average rider. Fuelled by ever-improving, safer and more stable bikes, we’ve all got faster downhill on trails that now pack in more extreme and challenging features. And, guess what? With the increased speed and technicality, it makes more sense than ever to double down on protection, especially on days when hitting uplifted bike parks, racing enduro or trail riding with faster mates.

Thankfully, alongside the improving bike tech and increasing trail speeds, body protection has also moved with the times, so there are now plenty of slick, lightweight and low-profile options to suit riders that regularly enjoy more technical terrain. If you’re anything like us, you’ll only wear more protection if it is lightweight and streamlined, and ensures an unencumbered ride quality. The good news is that modern body armour is no longer the bulky, heavy and restrictive affair it was years ago.

The six options here range from slender back panels to more wraparound torso and chest protection. While our chosen products don’t quite afford full-on DH race levels of protection, they nonetheless offer extra impact resistance while allowing you to get on with your riding without overheating or being too restricted. There is also some shoulder and upper arm protection on offer from one brand here.
