REMY METAILLER, FREERIDER/YOUTUBER

-

Rémy Métailler made his name in Squamish. He moved there in 2013 and set about mastering the steep, techie trails and building a healthy Youtube following. Best known for his stylish riding, precise line choice and braking control, he’s one of the gnarliest riders in the world.

My best trail would have to be Gouranga, in Squamish. It is not one of the most ridden trails around, but I feel like everyone who visits Squamish knows about it. In 2013, when I rode in Squamish for the very first time, my friend took me down Gouranga. I remember being scared of riding the main line. It probably was the first time I rode a slab like that before! I had a borrowed bike, and basically survived the features.

A few years later when I moved to Squamish I went and rode it again. By then I was much more experienced with the Squamish granite and started to look around for new lines, like I had done for years in the Whistler Bike Park. Turned out Gouranga had way more than one line! From there it became a game to ride as many lines as possible and film them. A short trail, but so many options! What people now refer to as The Remy Line is probably the hardest line in Squamish. Only a handful of people have ridden it and it’s a scary one, every time!

I particularly love that trail and bottom feature because it is a natural drop. Nothing was built. Very precise, tall and steep. It requires lots of skills and great risk management. When on top it kind of feels like dropping in at

Rampage! It definitely helped my career and drove me to focus on riding trail features more than just the bike park. I think it has pushed the local riding in a way and influenced a lot of riders.
