Guy can still be good for biking
“It’s Guy from Lincolnshire” has barely registered in my right lughole, as the bloke who’s just called me starts to explain, in detail – and very quickly – how renewable energy still only accounts for 9% of global supply.. Guy Martin is not your archetypal motorcycle racer. Guy Martin is not your archetypal anything. He’s a one-off. He didn’t break the mould – there was no mould! And while news (exclusively revealed to MCN, see page 24) of his intention to retire from international road racing will be met with sadness in some quarters and cycicism in others, I just hope he continues to spread the word about how great motorcycling is. Setting aside his vast success at many different road races, and his 17 TT podiums, what we really should be reflecting on is the incredibly positive message he has continually preached about motorcycling to those who don’t know one end of a bike from the other. He has reached beyond the converted. And that’s not been done by a British racer since Barry Sheene. Let’s hope he continues to attempt two-wheeled speed records and other mad biking stunts to keep motorycling in the public eye – in his usual positive, proactive and entertaining way.
