BUDGET VERSION OF BIG SCRAMBLER

Spy pictures show Triumph’s wallet-friendly 1200 on the way

-

‘The base-model Scrambler should be about £10.5k’

Triumph look set to unleash two new Scramblers using their bigger 1200cc engine. We’ve already seen spy shots of the top-of-the-range R version but this bike shows there’s a budget-friendly model, too.

Big twin

The bike will have 76bhp and a whopping 78ftlb of torque, perfect for dashing around town or down green lanes. Triumph might opt for the more powerful engine as fitted to the Thruxton, to give it even more go, although that could make it a bit of a handful. For the proper scrambler look it has twin high pipes, which we expect will be Arrow items on the R model. The current 900cc Street Scrambler has a ride-by-wire throttle, along with ABS and traction control. We expect the 1200 to build on that with rider modes and an Off-Road Pro mode, although this could be saved for the R.

Less show, same go

As we expected when we first saw the Scrambler 1200R the blingy gold Showa USD forks have gone in favour of some more modest black USD models. The suspension travel appears to be the same, but they’re likely to be less plush and not as adjustable. The piggyback Öhlins twin shocks have remained, although they’re also likely to be cheaper. The new model will have 200mm of suspension travel, which would put it on par with most adventure bikes and make it capable off-road.

It also has a large engine bashplate and brushguards. This bike appears to have a large TFT dash.

We expect Triumph to unveil both Scrambler 1200 models in November this year at Europe’s big bike show, with machines on sale early in 2019, priced at around £10,500.
