When it comes to meeting spots there are few places that can challenge the enduring heritage to be found in an area of ancient woodland just to the North East of London. Bikers have been flocking here since the halcyon days of speedway back in the 1930s, when the track at High Beach would attract tens of thousands. The circuit has long since disappeared, but there’s one element that still remains, and it’s still attracting bikers. So this week we head deep into Epping Forest to pay a visit to the Original Tea Hut. The hut was established by Ernie Miller in 1930, who ran it for some 50 years until handing over the reins to his son, Bert. These days it’s still in the family and operated by Bert’s nephew, Bradley Melton. “We offer hot and cold food, with both traditional and modern items on the menu,” says Bradley. “We can do bacon and eggs with a mug of tea, or you can have a smoked salmon wrap with a barista coffee.” With no toilets on site (or a roof, for that matter) facilities are minimal. However, the setting is superb, and there’s plenty of seating. Be prepared to mix with mountain bikers and dog walkers as the Tea Hut is popular with everyone enjoying the forest, but it’s the diversity of the varied clientele that makes it even more interesting. Bikes get their own parking area, and you’re pretty much guaranteed to find a likeminded soul to talk to. BMW airhead rider Stefan has been a regular at the Hut for over 40 years: “It’s a great place for meeting people,” Stefan tells MCN. “Plus, the food is good, the menu is diverse and you get plenty of it, too!”
