‘You have to keep pushing over the limit’

have a better bike then you will be faster in an easierway.

“It’s always a compromise, but it’s also something that I believe that I can improve in myself. Step by step I try to learn, and we’re working hard on this aspect.”

Finding self-control

“I don’t learn something every time. With some crashes you understand why it happened, and sometimes beforeIcrash I feel ‘oh, I’m going to crash’. You know that you’reover your limit, but you have to keep pushing because anotherrider is faster than you. That is where I need to control myself, because more than learning about the limits I need to learn to control myself. It’s something I’ve been learning for several years in the race but nowI need to learn to do it some more in practice as well.” Worryingly for his opponents, while Marquez might already be on course to become the most successful rider of all time (potentially even matching Rossi’s record of nine titles before the Italian retires), Marquez says he’s aware that he still isn’t a complete package. With him still learning, not only from his falls but as he matures, it’s scary to think of what could be if he does manage to find a way to further tame his raw talent with maturity and experience.

“You can always learn many things, but what I feel like is helping me more than anything is using my experience to become more mature in my life as well as around the circuit. I started in the paddock at 15, only a kid, and when I went to MotoGP at 20 I was still only really a teenager. I can learn many things about how to race or how to be technical, but to really improve you have to use the experience. That’s the main difference between Dovizioso, Rossi, Lorenzo and everyone else; they have the experience.

“My intention is to be able to improve again next year, but we’ll see if I can. My mentality has improved and maybe I will get better but one of my rivals will improve much more than me. I need to find the compromise between pushing and self-control, but I’ll work on improving and then see what my opponents do.”
