Royal Enfield’s two new 650s are a big step forward for the firm as they break back into the mainstream with a pair of competitively priced all-rounders. The engine is an all-new oil and air-cooled 648cc parallel twin knocking out an A2 licence-friendly 47bhp and 38ftlb of torque. It’s also been treated to a 270-degree firing order, which means it sounds and feels more like a V-twin. The six-speed gearbox is also new and boasts a slip-assist clutch for a lighter, but more positive feel at the lever, making town work even less of a chore. The Continental GT has long been their most well-known model, with archetypally British café racer styling and a sporty riding position. While the new one might look rather similar to the 535 version, the bigger engine and 95% new parts mean it’s a very different bike indeed. Joining the GT is the Interceptor, a more relaxed and traditional street bike that takes the Bullet template to a classy new level. It differs from the GT by having wider upright handlebars, twin seat and larger teardrop tank.
