New team-mate Maverick Viñales made a rapid start to 2017, topping all the tests and winning the first two races to establish himself as the team’s new number one following the departure of Lorenzo. But at Le Mans, Rossi proved that not only did he still have what it took to win but that he was prepared to risk everything as he crashed out of the battle for the win on the last lap.
