‘It’s a two-stroke and incredible fun’

- NEIL MURRAY Our used bike dealer reveals this week’s smartest buys

For some time I’ve been advocating buying small two-strokes while they’re still cheap. I’ve also noted that prices are rising as medium and large-capacity strokers are now silly money.

And I’ve done it again. I’ve bought one of my favourite tiddlers; a Yamaha RXS100. And here is why I recommend that you do exactly the same.

The RXS was on sale in the UK for about 13 years and still is elsewhere in the world, as a 110/115 (Far Eastern tax bracket), so parts are still easy to get. In fact, in Malaysia they do a nifty sports version clad in Mark One RD125LC bodywork and a whole tuning industry has been built up around it.

It’s surprisingly quick: top speed is just over 70mph and it’ll cruise at 55-60 all day. With some tuning it can be persuaded to top the 80mph mark.

It’s also incredibly robust. The engine (basically the earlier 1970s RS100 unit, restyled) is as tough as old boots. It’s also a doddle to service and it got electronic ignition quite early in its life, so no faffing around with points.

It fits normal people rather than just anorexic teens, thanks to a wide, raised handlebar and a surprisingly large seat that wouldn’t look out of place on a touring 750. It handles OK but the drum brakes are only just adequate. Oh and so are the 6v electrics, though a 12v conversion isn’t hard.

But best of all, it’s a two-stroke and is incredible fun to ride. Yes, really. Buy one yourself to find out.
