Our taste tester pays a return visit to the Super Sausage Café

Time to take a repeat visit to last year’s Golden Sausage champions

The top of the tree can be a precarious position, so this week we’re making a return visit to 2018’s Golden Sausage winner, the Super Sausage Café, to see how they stack up against the fierce competition we’ve uncovered on this year’s travels.

The SSC is between Towcester and Old Stratford on one of Britain’s longest established routes, Watling Street, a thoroughfare that predates the Romans and a fitting location for our title holder.

Food orders are taken at the counter, so we join the perpetual queue (such is SSC’s popularity) inside and peruse the menu displayed on the wall as we shuffle towards the till. It may sound like a drag to wait in line, but it’s a great place to meet people, especially if you’ve ridden in alone – cue regulars Paul Jones and Gordon Garrett. “It’s the friendly atmosphere and quality of the food that keeps us coming back,” says Paul. “It’s always good here.” We shoot straight down the middle with a medium breakfast, opting for tomatoes instead of beans on this occasion, and within minutes we’re presented with a plate of piping hot tucker. The generous portions make it great value at £7.70 and the quality ingredients even more so, but it’s SSC’s special signature sausage that takes the plaudits. “We sell 3000 sausages a week,” says owner Chris Murray, “plus a 1/4 tonne of bacon, 2500 eggs and 150 loaves. The beef in our TT burgers comes direct from the Isle of Man and we make them on site to our own recipe.” Far from slipping down the greasy slope of café mediocrity – the SSC is still on banging form in 2019.
