Will e-bikes hike taxes?

I read with interest the report on the Zero SR/F electric motorcycle. In the ‘How Much’ section, the tester quoted an equivalent cost per mile of a 300mpg motorcycle. This begs the question: If the sale of electric bikes takes off, how long will it be before the Chancellor realises that his take on the fuel duty drops? This applies for electric cars too. How will he recoup the loss of fuel duty? A swingeing increase in vehicle excise duty? I doubt our ‘benevolent’ leaders will ever grant favours to road users. Charles Harbidge, West Yorkshire
