All-women squad reach Everest Base Camp after epic ride
23 female adventurers tackle ride to Mount Everest Base Camp
Global motorcycling adventurer Steph Jeavons has arrived home in Wales after leading an all-female riding group on an epic 1429-mile ride to Mount Everest’s Base Camp. Jeavons took 23 riders through Tibet as part of a ride called ‘Girls On Top’. Hit by heavy rain from the outset, some riders were forced to pull out through exhaustion and injury, while others’ off-road ability unfortunately wasn’t up to the challenge caused by the hazardous conditions. Jeavons told MCN: “There was no respite. It was all a tough slog. A couple of the riders got injured and couldn’t continue. A couple pulled out through sheer exhaustion. “There was an exceptional amount of rain and the alternative was to not try at all and everybody was up for trying. It just proved too much for some.” Joined by a support vehicle carrying a medical and mechanical team, the journey was run in tandem with adventure firm, Nomadic Knights, with women from six nations taking part. The team tackled the mission on
Royal Enfield Himalayans. Jeavons said: “They are good workhorses and pulled through anything; I’d certainly do it again on these bikes.”
‘The feeling of achievement is second to none’ EXPEDITION LEADER STEPH JEAVONS
She added that one of the highlights of the trip was the bond created between riders: “The teamwork was amazing and even the most novice and tired of riders were getting off their bikes and helping others. The feeling of achievement and self-worth from a good adventure is second to none. There’s no shortcut to it.” Another trip is taking place in September 2020, although this one is open to male and female riders, with slots available on either a Himalayan or a Royal Enfield Bullet.
