Bringing some pure simplicity back to the adventure market

It’s clear Yamaha’s latest take on the adventure bike is very different from its rivals. Instead of going down the road of ever-increasing capacity, power and weight and electronic complexity akin to a superbike, the Ténéré boasts 74bhp, 204kg (kerb) and – beyond ABS – no electronic­s. Despite the smallish engine capacity, the new Tén has the looks and stature of a true adventure bike, albeit a small one. Seat height is 875mm, so it’s a relatively long stretch to the floor, with 210mm travel from the fully-adjustable KYB 43mm inverted fork and 200mm from the equally adjustable KYB rear shock with remote reservoir. Ground clearance is 240mm, underlinin­g its intent as a go-anywhere adventurer. The screen isn’t big, but wind protection exceeds expectatio­ns. Riding at motorway speeds in a peaked motocross helmet, you can feel the windblast tugging at your head and shoulders, but there’s none of the unpleasant buffeting or turbulence you might expect. There’s significan­t dive from the soft front fork set-up, but it’s only on the initial part of the stroke. The rear end is well planted and, despite its 200mm range of travel, soaks up the bumps without wallowing thanks to the well dialled-in standard compressio­n and rebound damping. This combinatio­n of well-supported suspension and lively motor makes it a genuine pleasure. With wide bars and near faultless throttle connection, progress is brisk on road.

Head into the dirt and Yamaha’s rich off-road heritage shines through. From the moment you stand up it just feels right – compliment­ed by the willing motor and impressive throttle connection. The level of mechanical grip through the steel chassis and monoshock rear is impressive.

The Ténéré isn’t the most powerful, high-spec bike in the adventure bike class. Instead, it’s a simple, lightweigh­t machine capable of ticking off big miles while being seriously fun and confidence-inspiring on the dirt. A simple, fun, effective adventure bike.
