Suzuki V-Strom 1050 XT
Value-loaded update makes it a serious adventure contender
Lovers of good value motorcycles have always had a soft spot for the V-Strom, and the new 1050XT has a spec close to the equipment levels of the class champs while still drastically undercutting their prices. The V-Strom’s 1037cc 90° V-twin is fundamentally unchanged – it’s the same capacity as the old motor, but Suzuki had to make it more efficient to get it through Euro5 regs, so there are new camshafts and a ride-bywire throttle. The tinkering has released 6bhp and peak torque. The chassis is almost the same as before, although Suzuki have fiddled with the internals of the KYB forks and shock, giving the new bike a tauter, plusher ride. Rider aids include traction control, cornering ABS, an anti-stall system, three power modes, hill-hold control and cruise control. The addition of cutting-edge electronics, brisk acceleration, a superb screen and a plusher ride make it a big leap forward.
