BMW R1250GS Adventure
Simply astounding on any terrain, it’s the default go-to option
BMW’s ingenious ShiftCam tech allows the charismatic boxer to switch electronically between high and lowlift cams. The step-free shift doesn’t just respond to revs or wheel speed like some systems, instead it monitors throttle position and how quickly it’s being opened, and reacts accordingly to deliver maximum drive when you ask for it. It’s seamless, and superb. Capacity is up from the 1200’s 1170cc to 1254cc which, in tandem with the ShiftCam, boosts peak torque by 14% and power by 9%, to 134bhp.
American-made BMW-branded Hayes radial calipers have replaced the 1200’s Brembos with no dip in performance – the stopping power is incredible while the unobtrusive cornering ABS (TE only) is impressive. Optional Dynamic Brake Control even shuts the throttle butterflies if you panic and don’t shut the throttle. The level of kit is superb, with the full-colour 6.5in TFT connected dash coming as standard, the base bike also benefits from LED lights, ASC (Automatic Stability Control) two riding modes (Rain and Road), plus HSC (Hill Start Control). The dash is class-leading and gives the Beemer a quality feel and will keep you amused for hours with a plethora of useful information, all linked via a bespoke app that tracks service info and allows route planning with a turn-by-turn navigation system.
The chassis, suspension and excellent rider aids are unchanged. The top spec Dynamic ESA suspension is incredible, ironing roads and tracks flat beneath your wheels. The tall 890/910mm seat and huge 30-litre fuel tank make it a bit of a monster, but it’s oh so controllable and superbly well balanced. You’ll be amazed what you can get away with on the new GSA. The boxer layout gives a natural balance which means slow speed manoeuvres are a doddle. The big Adventure looks intimidating, but with specific off-road rider aids and the correct tyres, it’s easy to manage even for inexperienced riders. It’s a genuinely outstanding world-shrinking package.
