‘Press the SOS button to get help’
Tested by Jordan Gibbons, three months / 4000 miles
Coming off your bike without a mobile phone signal must be every rider’s worst nightmare. But where there’s no phone signal, there’s nearly always a satellite signal. The Spot X is a tracker and twoway messenger, which can communicate over the satellite network. Simply type out messages on the keypad and send them to a mobile number or an email address. You can also send pre-defined ‘I’m safe’ messages to loved ones that include your GPS location. If it all goes Pete Tong, you can press an SOS button which will scramble a rescue team to sort you out.
In use I found it a little hit and miss. Sometimes messages would send or receive in a matter of seconds, other times over five minutes. There’s also no way to lock the keypad either, which is a pain if you keep it in a bag as it would be easy to press buttons at random. But even with the upfront cost and the price of service plans (from £10 per month), I wouldn’t leave on a big trip without one now.
