New Arai is first helmet to target new safety standards
Meet the all-new Arai Quantic… a fresh sports-touring helmet for 2021 and the first full-face option from the luxury lid manufacturer designed to meet stringent new ECE 22.06 safety regulations – although test results are yet to be confirmed.
Where the existing ECE 22.05 test involved impacts onto a flat anvil, the new system also measures rotational acceleration inside the helmet when dropped onto an anvil at a 45-degree angle. This is because research has suggested the twisting motion of a glancing impact can cause significant damage to brain tissue without any obvious external trauma.
Also looked at more thoroughly is the visor. To ensure it passes 22.06 and doesn’t shatter upon impact with a foreign body, a steel ball is fired at eye-level on the visor at 60m/s. Aiming to provide all-day comfort, the new design boasts vents in the forehead, integrated behind the Arai logo, plus slots within the chin and visor. There’s also a racing-inspired one-piece rear spoiler/ exhaust for increased airflow. In total there are 12 ventilation ports: six intakes and six exhausts. The visor has a Pinlock antimisting insert. Released alongside the rest of the Japanese firm’s 2021 range, the Quantic will be available next year and sit between their sportiest RX-7V and more basic Profile-V as a helmet designed for ‘the enthusiastic, sports-touring long-distance rider.’
Plain white will retail at £499.99 while graphics versions will be available for £599.99.
