Shocking shock linkage seizure
Surreal six-cylinder engine in a surprisingly perky package
We’re pushing our imaginary £5k budget here, but it’s worth stretching for BMW’s amazing 1600. The narrow inline six has a truck-like 129lb.ft at just 5250rpm, with 70% of this huge peak produced at just 1500rpm. That’s only just off idle, meaning a hilarious sense of clout from just teasing the twistgrip. And it has an amazing chassis too: that a bike this size can be so nimble is madness.
BUYER BEWARE
● Special engines need special attention, and the 1600 requires fancy oil and spark plugs. Servicing costs climb higher due to poor engine access and fiddly oil changes.
● Check for electrical woes – the LED lights don’t like the wet.
● Some bikes are bulletproof, others seem a tad fragile. Check everything works and is in good nick, from filler and pannier locks to the switchgear. Footpegs can snap off, too.
● Some finish isn’t great. Look for rusty stands, furry bolts, worn paint.
