McPint: ‘Can Marc do it again?’
I loved seeing Marquez win at the weekend. It was a fairytale ending to what has been a disastrous time for him. But he’s a strongminded bastard, isn’t he? He’s been out for a long time, the sport has moved on, but he had none of that is in his head. He knew he was going to win again. Watching his post-race interview I was just hanging off every word and you could see how much that victory mattered to him. When he said that he went faster the moment he saw the rain starting to fall, that’s just him tightening the screw on his rivals. Unbelievable. He has just got super-human confidence in himself and when the rain came he knew the track temp was 50 degrees and he knew that the moment the rain hit the ground it would be gone.
Marquez proved he had 100% belief in what he was doing and his team have never lost faith in him either.
‘It looked like he’d been been made to work’
To not be beaten around a track for 11 years is nuts. When they showed shots of his first win there he looked like a little kid, but I’ll tell you what, while he still looked young in his interview, he now looks like he’s been through the mill. It looked like he’d had to work hard.
Ultimately, he’s been through more than we will ever know. Racers never like revealing exactly how bad things are, do they? There’s no doubt he’s had a rough time, he’s been writtenoff by many, but you can’t keep someone like him down.
He knew it was the time to turn it around. He knew that if he couldn’t win at Sachsenring, maybe he wouldn’t ever again. Now he’s back, back on the crest of the wave.
I’ll tell you Honda would have had sweaty palms for a while there wondering if he could win. Now Honda have won again, but the second RCV home was Pol Espargaro in tenth. How’s he going to look himself in the mirror this morning?
The question now is what can Marquez do for the rest of the season? The series is so unpredictable but this won’t be the last time he wins in 2021.
