‘Waiting outside the gym at 6am’

- JOHN McGUINNESS TT Legend John McGuinness MBE in MCN every week

I was waiting outside the gym at six this morning waiting for it to open – I bet you didn’t think you’d ever hear me say that. To be fair, I’ve been on it since the start of the year. I woke up on New Year’s Day after all the festivities and I struggled to bend over to tie my own shoe laces – so I knew something had to be done.

I basically try to do something everyday whether that’s in the gym, cycling or out on my motocross bike. I was out three times on the crosser last week and that’s a proper workout. When I started I couldn’t do the popper up on my MX trousers, but I can now – so that’s a bit of progress!

Other than that life is busy again. I was at Honda on Tuesday, I’m at Tony Jefferies’ funeral today, I’m doing a chat show on Thursday and then I’m at the MCN show at ExCeL Friday, Saturday and Sunday so looking forward to that.

Then next week I get to collect my MBE. It’s happening at Windsor Castle, not Buckingham Palace and I don’t know at this stage if I’ll be meeting the Queen. If not I think it’ll be Princess Anne or Prince William. I hope it’s William because I’ve met him a few times before and he knows the craic. I won’t have to worry so much about all the protocol of how you address them – I’ll just be able to ask William if he had a good time at the TT in 2019.

Elsewhere it’s great that MotoGP testing has kicked off, but what I find amazing is that although they went a bit quicker, the lap times seem to be pretty much the same whenever they go to Sepang – new tyres, new bikes, same lap times. If you think about it with all the aero, ride height devices etc, etc the bikes have come on leaps and bounds, but the lap times have hardly changed. I do wonder if that test is more about blowing the cobwebs out and going through the motions. For me I think Jack Miller summed it up the best when he said “We don’t need to have the best bike at this test, we need to have the best bike at round one.”

At the end of the day that’s what it’s all about…

‘I couldn’t even bend down and tie my shoes’
