‘Get in there and capture that smile’

- Greg Villalobos, photo-journalist

For me, adventure riding and photography are impossible to separate. When I’m at home it often gives me a reason to head out, it’s a bit like going fishing, you never really know what you will come back with, which can be really exciting. You can ride the same old roads and trails but at different times of year, different weather and even different times of day it produces different results. I love it!

Here’s my top three tips…

The Golden Hour(s)

The light at the start and end of the day can be really spectacular. I often get up early, head out of the tent and snap like crazy as the sun comes up, and if you time it right at the end of the day and get camp made before the sun goes down you have a prime opportunity for great photos. The light is golden throwing long dramatic shadows, the sky turns from gold to purple, everything looks that little bit more beautiful.

Shoot your people

I love shooting bikes, especially against big backgrounds. But really it’s the people riding the bikes that are the reason I’m there. Don’t be scared to shove a camera in your friends’ faces and snap away. When they stop and take off their lid, get in there and capture that big smile.

Go low

When I’m shooting a bike one of my go-to techniques is to kneel down and put my camera really close to or even on the ground. Not only does this create a really dramatic angle, but it also helps make the foreground blurry and the bike sharp. This works really well on camera phones that tend to want to make everything sharp. You can really cheat your way into a pro looking photo!
