The rising title threat

Jorge Martin was the standout star of 2023. Back in August 2023, MotoGP was in danger of cruising to a snoozy conclusion before the 25-year-old Spaniard stepped up to take the fight to reigning World Champion Pecco Bagnaia. While he eventually fell short, with some justification he could call himself the fastest rider in the world last year. But just what is it that makes him so hard to beat?

From his days in Moto3, when

Martin recorded a staggering 20 pole positions across two seasons, it was clear he had the speed to go to the very top. And it didn’t take him long to convince the Pramac Ducati team of his talents.

“This rider is different to the guys I’ve worked with in the past,” Crew Chief Daniele Romagnoli told MCN. “He was, and still is, so quick at learning. When I checked the data with him, I explained something and it looked like it was really easy for him to understand. He would say, ‘OK, I’ll do that next time.’

And he did! He’s very quick, especially in the fast corners, and when entering, carrying high corner speed. His riding style is different from the riders of five years ago. He’s leaning off so far.”

Martin took this to a new level in 2023. His insane lean angles and other-worldly technique regularly wowed fellow Ducati riders who were all privy to his data. “It’s difficult to compare with him,” admitted Luca Marini.

Thankfully we don’t have to compare our own skills with his but you can get the chance to meet Martin at the show at London’s ExCeL on Friday, February 16.
