‘Don’t miss the Muckle Flugga’

- Steve Henry

Shetland born and bred, Steve Henry, Goldwing owner and font of local knowledge, is the go-to guy on Shetland for all things bike. He’s the only bike instructor on Shetland, a trained guide and one of the founders of the Simmer Dim Rally, the UK’s most northerly bike rally, which is now in its 36th year. “There’s so many sights that it’s difficult to pick the best,” said Steve. “But I’d say you have to explore Skaw and Saxa Vord. They’re the most northerly tip of Unst and two ferry rides from the mainland, but worth it. You get to see the famous Muckle Flugga lighthouse. Eshaness, to the west of the mainland, is a fantastic place to spot seals and the beaches are beautiful. “The puffins play around the cliffs of Sumburgh Head, to the south, they’re not afraid of humans and fly close to your head. There’s also a great cafe where you can take in the view.” “You get all four seasons in a day here, so be prepared to ride in all weathers. And be careful of free-roaming sheep; they are as thick as two short planks.”
