Don’t settle for a spongy lever

-

We get a lot of bikes with spongy brake levers coming into our workshops. They usually result from keen owners who’ve bled their brakes via the correct process but haven’t been able to get all of the air out of the system. Not only does this massively reduce braking feel and power, but it’s a huge safety risk, too. Always, always ensure that you have good, firm feel at your lever after renewing your fluid. If you don’t then you need to try bleeding again, perhaps at the bleed nipple on your bike’s front master cylinder, if your model has one, as air can become trapped there.

You can also cable tie the front brake lever to the handlebar, open the reservoir cap and leave overnight, as this sometimes allows trapped air to leave the system naturally. Failing that, just book it into your dealers and get it sorted. Badly performing brakes are no joke and if in doubt, get them checked by a pro.
