MotoGP returns to Silverstone for the GoPro British Grand Prix on the Bank Holiday weekend of August 24-26 and always delivers thrilling action on track, as well as plenty more activities off-track.
With just two weeks to go until the GoPro British Grand Prix, we asked well respected MotoGP journalist and former MCN reporter Mat Oxley to pick out some of his favourite #SilverstoneStories.
One of Mat’s favourite Silverstone Grand Prix memories is perhaps one of the most famous racing duels of all time: Barry Sheene racing against his arch-rival Kenny Roberts in 1979. Mat recalls: “Sheene and reigning champ Roberts duked it out throughout the race, only for Sheene to lose vital yards at the start of the last lap, when the pair passed backmarker George Fogarty (Carl’s dad). But the home race hero wasn’t for giving in. He rode a storming last few corners, hurtling throughout Woodcote for the final time and gaining, gaining, gaining on Roberts. He went for the outside line as the chequered flag loomed, but ran out of room because Roberts was using all of the track.
“At around 120mph he missed the grass by inches and dipped out on the win by 0.03 seconds.”
You can share your own memory on Silverstone’s Facebook page using #SilverstoneStories, and everyone who shares a story will be in with a chance of meeting British MotoGP star Cal Crutchlow and spending the Friday practice session at Silverstone in his LCR Honda pit box.
