‘You not only see the bikes up close; you hear them, too’

Every August something very special happens at Brackley, Northants, when, for one day, it transforms from bustling market town into petrolhead paradise. The Brackley Festival of Motorcycling is a celebration of every aspect of bike culture. This year marks its 10th anniversary and MCN joined the fun. The focus is the High Street which is closed to make way for historic race bikes. From 10am on Sunday small groups of every type of two and four-stroke racer thrill the crowds. Sadly, this year’s weather wasn’t too kind but the sometimes wet track didn’t stop the riders from putting on a show. “It’s a great event because you can not only see the bikes up close, you can hear them up close too,” says owner Des Lindsey. “You can’t replicate the chatter of flat slide carbs and tinkle of a dry clutch.” Keeping the groups small allows spectators to enjoy each machine, while giant TV screens and on-grid interviews give more insight than you get anywhere else. There were also famous names taking part such as Sammy Miller, James Ellison and Freddie Spencer.

“It’s great to see the local community welcome motorcycling and the feel the enthusiasm of the crowds,” Fast Freddie told MCN. “It’s great to be a part of it.” Away from the High Street there’s a host of owners clubs; trade stands, off-road action and an Arenacross show. And Brackley gives something back, too.

“Once we’ve deducted costs we can make what’s left work for us,” says Chairman Dominic Copas. “So we make substantial donations to the Air Ambulance, Blood Bikers and other local good causes.”
