Ron's got your back

I have just read your article about Ron Haslam’s pillion laps at the Honda Race School. I was fortunate enough to sit behind Ron for four laps last Wednesday.

For my youngest son’s birthday we organised an On Track experience at the Honda Race School. He thoroughly enjoyed it and learned a huge amount. There was also an opportunity to put your name down for pillion laps in the afternoon. I spend a lot of my life being anxious and scared, but Ron Haslam is a racing legend and a hero to me. I used to watch him race in the 70s and 80s, so I put my name down and immediately went into meltdown! When I had a phone call to say, “Mr Haslam is ready to take you for your pillion laps” I actually thought I might stop breathing.

But, all I can say is if you ever get a chance to ride pillion with Ron Haslam, just do it. I would do it again in a heartbeat. Everyone was so lovely to me as I cried and fretted my way through kitting up, and when I met Ron, he was calming and understanding. I won’t lie, there were times I was terrified as we flew

round at speeds that I have since described as ‘Ron Speed’, but never once did I feel unsafe.
