‘The question I’m always asked is: Why?’

#Ride5k member Philip Weston does 1000-mile days for fun

I regularly ride 1000-mile days and a fair few 1500-mile days. I’ve completed over 40 Iron Butt rides, both in the UK and mainland Europe. I’m the only rider to have ridden 3000 miles in two days in the UK, which isn’t easy now as there is always extensive work on the motorways. I have also ridden four Iron Butts in the USA and on my second rally was 14th from 100 entries after riding close to 10,000 miles in 11 days. The question I always get asked is, ‘Why?’ The answer is; I ride for the pleasure of riding a bike, not to go places as such. The going and returning are what does it for me. That said, once you suss out how to ride 1000-mile days, it’s surprising where you can go. I went to Finistere in Spain for a weekend.
