WALKER’S TICKS ALL THE BOXES

MCN calls in on a great pit-stop on the edge of Thetford Forest

Whether it’s to explore twisty back roads, get some track time at Snetterton or enjoy mile after mile of green lanes, there’s something for every kind of biker in East Anglia. This week our continuing quest takes us to the doorstep of this fabulous region and the service area at Barton Mills, where beyond the filling stations and fast food outlets we find a place with motorcyclists in mind: the ever-popular Walker’s Snacks. It’s a chilly autumn morning as we roll in but already there are several bikes parked up and they just keep on coming. “I’m here at least once a week,” says Chris Creedy. “The food is good and it’s a great place to meet up with friends.” As it’s dry we’re happy enough to sit outside, but there is a sheltered eating area too; it’s standing room only, but does provide the opportunity to dry off and warm up with a steaming mug of something hot and some calorific heaven.

All the food is cooked to order, and is worth the wait. Our breakfast is prepared to perfection and passes the taste test with flying colours. John Shaw has been co-owner of Walker’s for over 20 years. “We’re always pleased to see bikers,” he says. “In the summer we can have 300 turn up. Quite a few clubs stop here and we even have regular visitors from mainland Europe.” With its five-star hygiene rating and top-quality nosh Walker’s is a cut above the average roadside joint and it’s that fact combined with the friendly service that we’re sure keeps customers coming back.
