STAMINA SECRETS

KILIAN JORNET’S ENDURANCEBOOSTING ADVICE

-

TRAIN TO BURN FAT

“I often train in a fasted state so my body can adapt and learn to convert fat to energy,” says Jornet. “It means I can push on if I need to miss a food station in a race.”

REVIEW YOUR RUNNING

“Assess how you run, look at your pattern and experiment with your running style to see if there are ways you can change the biomechanics to conserve energy. The better you get to know your body, the more you will understand how it works.”

GO OFF-ROAD

“Do some sport-specific strength training and core stabilisation work. Getting a strong core, plus upper and lower-body strength will improve your stamina.”

GET IN THE ZONE

“Use heart-rate training zones to build endurance. I train 88 per cent of the time at intensities Z1-Z3 (Z2 for long workouts to create volume), ten per cent of the time at high intensity doing intervals and repetitions, and two per cent of the time at max intensity (Z6-Z7).”
