Swapping out red meat for plant-based alternatives has been shown to reduce blood levels of trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) – a molecule strongly linked with cardiovascular disease – in a new Stanford Medicine study. LDL cholesterol (the ‘bad’ type) also dropped significantly when making the switch to plant-based alternatives. Although plant burgers made from whole foods such as beans and chopped mushrooms are a better substitution, it seems even the more processed meatless alternatives may provide some benefits.
