DANGER AVERTED

ALDO KANE’S BEST ADVICE FOR OVERCOMING PERILOUS SITUATIONS

BREATHE

“The first thing you need to do in a dangerous situation is breathe,” says Kane. “People get panicked, they hyperventilate and then they’re not able to make logical, pragmatic decisions. All you need to do is breathe out slowly, pause, breathe in slowly, pause. It’s super simple, but it allows you to rewire and refocus your brain.”

FACE FACTS

“The second thing you need to do is deal with the facts,” Kane continues. “It sounds easy, but everyone has prejudices and biases and opinions, and it’s about putting those to one side and knowing exactly what the situation is.”

BE DECISIVE

“Finally,” says Kane, “it’s about making decisions. Most people will be in a denial stage for a while, then they’ll deliberate, and then eventually – or maybe not – they might make a decision. You can circumvent all that by making a decision and sticking with it. The biggest problem in those situations is that people feel helpless – they get blown around by the situation instead of just taking charge of it.”
