Some endurance athletes claim a ketogenic diet – very low carb and high fat – helps improve endurance performanc­e, because it promotes physiologi­cal changes that minimise the body’s reliance on carbohydra­tes. But a recent review, combining results from six separate studies, shows that a keto diet has no reliable effects on the key fitness indicator VO2 Max (the maximum amount of oxygen your body can use during exercise).5
