BUYING TIPS
Wiggle bike mechanic and long-distance rider Sam Gupta reveals what to buy – and why – this spring
1. SLIM DOWN
Well-fitting kit will have a huge impact on your aero efficiency. Aim for a jersey that is snug around the arms and doesn’t create a wind-catching parachute.
2. CHOOSE A VENTED HELMET
Many modern helmets are provided with aero covers, which are great for picking up the pace when you’re racing. But make sure your helmet has good ventilation ready for when the temperatures rise this spring.
3. INVEST IN A GILET
A sleeveless jacket is the best kit for when winter turns to spring. Wearing a gilet cuts out the wind chill but allows your arms to breathe so you can better regulate your body temperature.
4. WEAR A BASELAYER
In the unpredictable spring months, a baselayer will help to maintain a comfortable body temperature and keep sweat off your skin, so you can ditch the winter layers and sport a lighter and more aero jersey on top.
5. ADJUST YOUR LENSES
Spring riding can be a mix of cloudy skies, low sun and wet roads. On a cloudy day, low-light lenses, which are often rosecoloured, will boost the contrast of your surroundings. And for low sun and wet road days, polarising lenses will allow you to see through the sharp contrasts between light and shadow.
6. ADD EXTRA SPROCKETS
Spring is a good time to work on your leg speed, with high-cadence drills to help you on the climbs. Adding a more forgiving ratio on your chainset will ensure you can always spin your legs faster.
7. GET A SWISS BALL
Spring is when you need to strengthen your core in time for some intense summer intervals. A Swiss ball will help you to work your core from all angles at home.
8. FIT WIDER TYRES
They will increase surface area with the road, for added comfort as you start picking up the pace on your spring adventures.
