Betaine is a modified amino acid found in shellfish, flour, many vegetables like beetroot and spinach, citrus fruit, alfalfa sprouts and wheat germ. A new study in professional footballers shows betaine supplementation can improve one-rep max, maximal oxygen uptake and repeated spring ability.6 The same authors showed in a previous study that it may help to increase testosterone to cortisol ratio and reduce systemic inflammation, which could explain these improvements in performance.
