If you enjoyed a bit of cranberry sauce with your Christmas lunch, it might have helped to keep your pecker in good health. That’s because a large review study has confirmed the old wives’ tale that cranberrie­s can prevent urinary tract infections (UTIs).2 The review of ten controlled trials showed that regular cranberry consumptio­n reduced risk of recurring UTIs by a whopping 38%. It’s thought that these protective effects are due to a group of polyphenol­s in cranberrie­s called ‘a-type proanthocy­anidins’.
