SQUADRON GOALS
From standard military issue to front row staple, the bomber jacket has come a very long way. Invest in the high street’s best to join the style jet- set
From air force runways to decidedly chicer ones, this bomber is bang for your buck
It’s a well-worn saying in menswear circles, but one that still resonates: the best design is borne out of necessity. Created for US air force pilots in the ’ 50s, the bomber became a civvy style staple popular with UK subcultures from mods to skins. And while it never really disappeared, it’s a look that has come back with a bang in recent seasons.
“This classic shape is definitely piquing designer interest again,” says Daisy Deane, stylist to fashionforward musicians such as 50 Cent and Stormzy. “We’ve seen takes on the original with clever prints and useful details from the likes of Prada, Givenchy and APC.”
Fortunately, you needn’t pay through the nose to enjoy new updates. Deane reckons this Asos jacket is the one to have in your arsenal: “The suedette patches, heavyduty zips and oversized pockets make this highstreet piece feel designer.”
Of course, the beauty of the old bomber was its versatility. With judicious styling you’ll find use for it in any scenario. “With a white shirt and chinos you can just about get away with it in the o ice,” says Deane. “For a novel take, go up a size and wear it over a denim jacket.”
As always with statement pieces, let them do the work and dial down the rest of your look. A jacket like this is ammunition enough.
