04 Are separates an acceptable alternative to the suit?

-

Mixing and matching separate blazers and trousers has become a popular way of subverting traditional tailoring rules, championed in particular by the likes of Thom Sweeney and Hardy Amies. But it’s not without pitfalls.

“The beauty of a suit, of course, is that it’s constructed as a whole so it’s impossible to get wrong,” says Grant. “But a tailored jacket worn with odd trousers can be fine, too; pair paler bottoms with a darker top as a rule of thumb.

Charlie Casely-hayford agrees: “Suiting separates are the most versatile pieces a man can have in his wardrobe,” he says. “But if you’re going to break up the suit, a blazer with less internal structure and softer shoulders works best. This will also allow you to alternate more fluidly between formal trousers, chinos and even jeans.”

So, by all means, break the rules – just give it some thought first. After all, you’ll never get a pay rise looking like Jeremy Clarkson.
