Francis Bacon In Your Blood By Michael Peppiatt Recommended by Daniel Kearns, creative director of Kent & Curwen

“I’ve always been fascinated by Francis Bacon and his artwork. I picked up this memoir after a trip to his studio, which was relocated from London to Ireland in the late 1990s and recreated at Dublin City Gallery The Hugh Lane. The writer, Peppiatt, is a Cambridge student who comes to Soho to interview Bacon and, on meeting him, is propelled into the underground art scene, mesmerised by Bacon and his peers. I love the rare insight into Bacon’s world. It’s amazing to read about his personality and thought process – as well as those of the people around him, such as Lucian Freud, John Deakin and Bacon’s lover George Dyer. I consider Bacon to be one of the greats and this book is funny and enthralling. It inspired me to create the “Artist” section of our AW18 collection.”

“For me, reading is 50% business research and 50% pure escapism. Papillon is definitely the latter. It’s a captivating story of adventure about a man who is tried and convicted in Paris for a murder that he didn’t commit. He is thrown into the French penal system and the book follows his imprisonment and escape, his hopes and fears – and everything else. It’s a good yarn. There’s also a sequel called Banco. The first book ends with him jumping into the sea in an attempt to escape, with a giant sack of coconuts for floatation. That’s the last you hear of him. The next one reveals that he did survive, and explores his life on the mainland after being released. I’m interested in believable things, not fantasies – the kind of stories that make you think: ‘ What would I do?’”
