Win­ter work­outs can be a drag. Done right, this move will prime your body for fu­ture gains

For the fair-weather gym-goer, win­ter is a time when fit­ness as­pi­ra­tions are all too eas­ily left in the cold. True MH men, how­ever, know that the foun­da­tions of your body goals are best laid, well, right now. Par­ties, hang­overs and chilly morn­ings may put you off long runs and heavy squats, but there’s a low-in­ten­sity ex­er­cise that, if de­ployed daily, can put you on the path to un­ri­valled re­sults in 2019. Re­quir­ing just 10 con­trolled reps on each side, it won’t even make you break a sweat.

“This move will strengthen your lower back and im­prove over­head flex­i­bil­ity,” says move­ment coach Ol­lie Frost, and its in­sta­bil­ity will also bol­ster your core strength. Ad­dress weak­nesses in th­ese cru­cial ar­eas now, and your course to long-term suc­cess is clear. “It boosts brain func­tion, too,” says Frost. “Sim­pler ex­er­cises will feel far eas­ier if you get used to per­form­ing com­plex moves.” So, that’s you men­tally and phys­i­cally prepped for next year, then.
