BEST FOR... EXPLORERS BIG SKY

-

Echoing the state’s nickname, Big Sky Country, this Montana resort’s 5,800 skiable acres offer plenty to explore – most of it precipitous and powdery. We suggest visiting Big Sky Resort as the first of a twocentre road trip, then heading south to Jackson Hole in Wyoming. This Wild West town is worth a cowpoke around, but the tough terrain above it is the real discovery. The trails are largely black-diamond steep, including Corbet’s Couloir, with its 10-20ft drop – giving you enough air time to scream several four-letter words. For grizzly-man types, the volcanic Yellowstone National Park is nearby: home to top geysers such as Old Faithful, as well as bison, wolves, elks and eagles bald and golden. GO OFF-PISTE Avoid Yellowstone coach tours; a snowmobile will bring you closer to nature. But beware: the grizzlies here will take your picnic basket – and you. skisafari.com
