France is clueless when it comes to après ski. Take the professional animations of La Folie Douce bars: all-singing, all-dancing, all-gold lamé… all wrong. True après means stomping on a table in ski boots, beer stein in one hand, fruity schnapps in the other, singing along to 1970s tunes: “Hiiiiiiighway to Hell!” This is Austria and, specifically, St Anton. At 4pm, stop a few hundred metres short of the resort at the Mooserwirt, rumoured to sell more beer per square metre than any other Austrian bar. The trick is to leave just sober enough to ride the remaining 100m.
